Origin Story
The Silver Krugerrand was introduced in 2017 to commemorate the Gold Krugerrand's 50th anniversary, the latter of which was quickly established as one of the first and most popular bullion coins for private ownership.
Design
The design is the same as that of the South African Gold Krugerrand coin.
- Heads: The obverse design features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic.
- Tails: On the reverse, the South African Gold Krugerrand has a springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa, bounding across the field.
Production Details
South African Silver Krugerrand coins consist of 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver. They do not have any assigned value as legal tender.
The bullion version of the Silver Krugerrands had a mintage limit of 1,000,000 in their first few years, whereas only 15,000 proof versions were made in 2017-2018, which increased to 20,000 in 2019.
