British Silver Britannia

Learn about the origin, design and production of British Silver Britannia coins.

Origin Story

The silver Britannia coin was first introduced by the Royal Mint in 1997 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its counterpart, the gold Britannia.

Design

  • Heads: The obverse design historically featured a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. However, as of 2023, Britannia coins feature King Charles III following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Tails: On the reverse, the British Silver Britannia coin depicts the Britannia, the personification of Britain, holding a trident and olive branch, with a shield bearing the Union Flag. The silver Britannia reverse has featured both the classic standing Britannia design and various alternate, non-repeating versions of Britannia over the years.

Production Details

The silver Britannia is a 1 troy ounce coin with a £2 (2 Pound) face value. In the early years, the silver Britannia had a fineness of 95.8%. As of 2013, the silver purity was increased to .999 or 99.9% fine silver.

The Royal Mint has an unlimited mintage for the Britannia coins, so production is flexible to market demand.
