Origin Story
The silver Britannia coin was first introduced by the Royal Mint in 1997 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its counterpart, the gold Britannia.
Design
- Heads: The obverse design historically featured a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. However, as of 2023, Britannia coins feature King Charles III following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
- Tails: On the reverse, the British Silver Britannia coin depicts the Britannia, the personification of Britain, holding a trident and olive branch, with a shield bearing the Union Flag. The silver Britannia reverse has featured both the classic standing Britannia design and various alternate, non-repeating versions of Britannia over the years.
Production Details
The silver Britannia is a 1 troy ounce coin with a £2 (2 Pound) face value. In the early years, the silver Britannia had a fineness of 95.8%. As of 2013, the silver purity was increased to .999 or 99.9% fine silver.
The Royal Mint has an unlimited mintage for the Britannia coins, so production is flexible to market demand.
